Movie Review: Raaz Reboot Is A ‘Horrifying’ Mishmash Of Clichés

If you have been an avid watcher of horror movies, Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz Reboot will remind you of many of them. Or maybe, even all of them. The plot, the scenes -- there’s almost nothing that you haven’t seen before in some other ghost drama.

The storyline is eerily identical to Vikram’s own 2002 Bipasha Basu-Dino Morea-starrer, Raaz. Newlyweds Shaina (Kriti Kharbanda) and Rehaan (Gaurav Arora) shift base to Romania, after the latter lands a cushy job there. Their marriage has already reached a breaking point, because of a Raaz that Rehaan keeps from his wife. Soon, Shaina finds out that the house is haunted.

Rewind to the original. In Raaz too, Sanjana (Bipasha) and Aditya (Dino) are dealing with a troubled marriage, owing to the strain of a secret that he keeps from her. Like Shaina, Sanjana too finds out that her bungalow has an evil spirit residing in it. The only difference is, the 2002 horror story unfolded in Ooty instead of Romania.

While Aditya had ended up being responsible for the death of a woman he had an extramarital affair with, in Raaz Reboot, Rehaan has the blood of … well, not gonna give away the ‘BIG’ suspense, just in case you still want to watch it.  The title ‘Raaz Reboot’ more than justifies the sense of déjà vu it evokes in the viewer.

Let alone the storyline, the dialogues are pretty clichéd, too. Try this gem: “Mera pyaar hi mera bhagwaan hain. Aur mere pyaar ko mera bhagwan hi bachayega”. Also, the ‘ghost’ (we are not revealing the Raaz of his/her identity) showing how evil IT is by repeatedly saying ‘F**k’ is actually funny, if you know what we mean. Talking about hilarious scenes, there’s also one where Rehaan gets all romantic with a possessed Shaina.

The music is passable, the location is beautiful and the performances, just about okay. While debutants Gaurav and Kriti (it’s her first outing in Bollywood) have a lot of scope for improvement, Emraan Hashmi should seriously start worrying about his movie choices. Here’s a tip: Try reading the script before signing on a movie.

In a nutshell, don’t watch this one if you have already seen a few Hindi and Hollywood horror movies. There’s nothing original about the film. And that’s the ‘scariest’ thing about it.
