Why is B’wood fixated with rehashing popular numbers?

In the last five weeks, as many as five songs have been nothing but reprise versions of original hits. Agreed, they have stormed the music charts – but surely remaking an old ditty and riding on its success wave can’t be the way forward. Whatever happened to originality? Take a look where filmmakers and music composers have taken the easy way out and rejigged an old track.

High Heels (Ki & Ka)

The original composed by Yo Yo Honey Singh was a huge hit when it came out in 2012. With Aditi Singh Sharma’s vocals and a slight change in lyrics, the number has now been used in Kareena Kapoor-Arjun Kapoor starrer Ki & Ka. This, when the film boasts of Ilaiyaraja and Mithoon as its music composers.

Rock Tha Party (Rocky Handsome)

Kar Gayi Chull (Kapoor & Sons)

Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra’s dance number, Kar Gayi Chull is rocking the charts. But music composer Amaal Mallik can take very little credit for it. The song, originally created by Baadshah and Fazilpuria in 2014, was a chartbuster in its own right. All the Kapoor & Sons’ team had to do was change the lyrics around, get Alia-Sidharth to groove and voila – you have a winner!

Ishq Samundar (Teraa Surroor)

Remember Sanjay Dutt and Isha Koppikar’s dance number Ishq Samundar? The Anand Raj Anand composition for Kaante (2002) had become a huge hit. Guess Himesh Reshammiya was particularly fond of it. What else can explain him remixing the track and using it in Teraa Surroor?

Tum Bin (Sanam Re)

One of the reasons why Tum Bin turned out to be a sleeper hit was its impressive music. Even 15 years later, the soft vocals of Chitra continue to tug at your heart. Composer Jeet Gannguli reprised Tum Bin’s title track for Sanam Re, with Shreya Goshal lending the vocals. This one too is romantic but lacks the haunting quality of the original.
