The trailer for Fifty Shades Darker has sent fans into a tizzy and its back to a world of BDSM laced with a little bit of romance. But before there was anything Fifty Shades, the world was scandalised by a little-known but cult-favourite film, Story of O.
The Story of O released in 1975 and was based on an erotic-fiction book written by Jean-Jacques Pauvert under the pen name Pauline Reage, written in 1954. The film was very controversial because of the gratuitous sexual intercourse scenes and scenes depiction BDSM practices. It also had some same-sex scenes and the film was refused certification for a British release in 1975.

The book and the film have inspired countless other comic books and documentaries and was one of the first insights into the then-taboo world of BDSM.
However, the film has become iconic in BDSM circles and almost every film that’s covered BDSM has several references and inspirations from Story of O. For example, the cat-mask that’s the central point Fifty Shades Darker is quite similar to the owl-mask that was worn by the main protagonist in Story of O.
