Manoj Muntashir: Vulgarity doesn’t have any place in art
With the popular number Galliyan from Ek Villain, Manoj Muntashir has made his mark in Bollywood. The lyricist, who penned the song Tu Mere Paas in Wazir, talks to SpotboyE about it all – from writing romantic songs to the issue of royalty. Excerpts:

How did Tu Mere Paas from Wazir happen?

I was working on PK with Ankit Tiwari when Vidhu sir (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) told us that he wanted to work with us again. He told me it would be a theme song – one that was romantic but spoke about insecurity too. This was a huge responsibility but thankfully we pulled it off and people have loved the track.

Your previous song Dil Darbadar in PK was not promoted well. Did that bother you?

No. I was hopeful that this song will be promoted well because he had to settle the score (smiles).

You are extremely selective about your songs…

After Galliyan became popular, like everyone else, even I was labelled. People started approaching me only for soulful, romantic numbers. It took me a while to prove my versatility. With time, people started giving me more work and now I will be having seven solo projects releasing this year.

What is your stand on double meaning lyrics?

You can be witty, naughty and humorous but vulgarity does not have any place in art. Films can be categorised as ‘A’ certificate, but television has no certification. When a song is played on TV, kids pick it up. So being a father, I try to write songs which are beautiful and far from vulgar. If you see the top 10 songs of 2015, you will notice that most of them have clean lyrics.

If you are asked to write such a song, will you?

Not at all. My upcoming film, Jai GangaaJal has songs which are raunchy but they don’t cross the limit.

The music industry is divided on the issue of royalty. What’s your take?

It’s our right – the writer and composers deserve it. But if you keep the topic of royalty aside, the situation is not so bad. Writers are paid really well today. They are paid 4 or 5 times more than the singer. People need to stop crying about writers being exploited.

You’ve written the dialogue for Bahubali. Do you intend to write dialogue for any other movie besides Bahubali 2?

I have many offers but I don’t have the time right now. Maybe in the future when I get bored of writing lyrics, I will pursue dialogue writing.
