2016 : A year of biographical dramas

The Hindi film industry is one of the leading film manufacturers in the world. From multi-starrer big budget films to small independent cinema, you’ll find it all here!

And if you talk about the year 2016, the kind of films that stood out are Biopics.

Sonam Kapoor starer Neerja released on February 19. The film is about how Neerja Bhanot, head purser for airline Pan Am, saved hundreds of lives while sacrificing her own in a plane hijack incident in 1986.

With Neerja still fresh in the viewers’ mind, director Hansal Mehta came out with his biographical drama Aligarh. The film based on true incidents, released on February 26 and told the story of a homosexual professor played by Manoj Bajpayee, who was sacked because of his sexual orientation.

Azhar, an Indian sports drama was inspired by the life of Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin and released on May 13. The film showed the rise and fall of former Indian cricket captain and how he tainted his glorious career with the match-fixing scandal.

Subsequent week, Randeep Hooda’s hardcore performance in and as Sarbjit simply won hearts. The film showed the struggle of a sister to bring back her brother who was wrongly accussed of spying and bombing in Pakistan.

Based on the little running sensation, Budhiya Singh – Born to Run, released on August 5. It told the story of a 5-year-old Budhiya, who ran 48 marathons, at his tender age. The film starred Manoj Bajpayee as a coach and Mayur Patole as the title character.

Trailer of another biopic of Cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni is already creating some serious buzz. This Neeraj Pandey film titled M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story will be releasing on September 30 and fans can’t wait to catch this one.

As we near the end of 2016, the release date of much anticipated biographical sports drama film ‘Dangal’ draws closer. Slated to release on December 23, the film stars Aamir Khan portraying the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who taught wrestling to his daughters.

Speculated to release this year Sachin: A Billion Dreams is a biopic on the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. In this film Sachin and his son Arjun Tendulkar are expected to be in the lead cast.
