It was 9 years ago that one of Imtiaz Ali’s simplest, most human and romantic film hit the celluloid. It has lingered on our minds and continues to make us feel all gooey in our hearts. A film that featured the real life jodi of Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. The outcome of this film was uncertain as past films with the same cast were losing lustre due to convoluted storylines.
But even with two big films Saawariya and Om Shanti Om in upcoming weeks, Jab We Met was the underdog that refused to give up next to the two industry titans. The film marked the entry of Imtiaz Ali as the next big storyteller, Kareena as a multifaceted superstar and Shahid as the poster boy of every woolgathering single girl.
The film was organic from the very beginning. Most directors can singlehandedly ruin a genuinely gifted actor like Kareena by accentuating her histrionics like her past disasters. But Imtiaz Ali ‘frankensteined’ a new Kareena, made her come out of her own skin and created a character so relatable that people still discuss and compare Kareena’s other films with Jab We Met. The audience also got to see an immensely mature Shahid who bounced back from a heartbroken soul to a zesty 20 something who could feel love again. From the raspy and humorous dialogues to side-splitting situations, the screenplay is so enjoyable that till this day, you can tune in and watch the movie from any given point in any miserable situation and it will still manage to cheer you up.
With the genie of chartbusters, music maestro Pritam on board, the music was pitch perfect and it was ringing everywhere, from cars to radio and even first generation iPods. The music even managed to stay on charts an astonishing six months after. Jab We Met is the perfect concoction of romance, drama and the signature dash of epiphany magic of filmmaker par excellence Imtiaz Ali.
