VIDEO : Report Card Of Female-Centric Action Films At The Box-Office

Sonakshi Sinha went all guns blazing with her action thriller Akira last week. The AR Murugadoss-directed film was a remake of the Tamil hit Mouna Guru (2011). Sadly though for Sona, Akira didn’t live up to expectations. In 5 days, Akira had managed to earn just about Rs 22.45 crore.

Many people are writing the film off stating that a female-centric action film hasn’t ever worked in Bollywood. Reason: Fans don’t like to see heroines kicking ass. This probably explains why there have been quite a few female-centric action films that tanked at the box-office. However, there have also been great many examples of female centric action films that set the cash registers ringing.

First in the list is Anushka Sharma in NH 10: Anushka was known for playing the bubbly girl-next-door roles. However, with this gritty thriller, she broke the mould and received immense critical appreciation.

Rani Mukerji in Mardaani released in 2014 and as the name of the movie itself suggests, it was a dhamakedaar action-packed film. Rani shone in her role of a tough-as-nails cop.

Now, let’s see the list of flops which had a woman at the centre of it

Priyanka’s 2016 release Jai GangaaJal didn’t click at cinemas. The actress kicked some serious butt as the gritty small town Assistant Commissioner of Police in this sequel to Ajay Devgn’s GangaaJal. However, the film wasn’t received well and it sank without a trace.

Kangana was riding high after the super success of Queen in 2014 However; her subsequent release Revolver Rani didn’t meet the same fate. As the small-town goon, she did complete justice to her character in this crime drama. But the film found no takers in the audience.

Not one, but two powerful performances by Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla couldn’t salvage the fate of Gulaab Gang that released in 2014.

Sushmita Sen’s Samay released in 2003 was said to be way ahead of its time. Sushmita did a brilliant job in her role of a cop investigating a series of murders and pulled off some thrilling stunts. Unfortunately, the movie turned out to be a cold turkey.
