Madhuri began by saying that the new song from Kalank, Tabaah Ho Gaye, is not like Maar Daala (Devdas song). Her character of Bahar Begum is very restrained and like a recluse. The actress revealed that she is venting in the song and the pain had to be expressed through her dance, so it can’t be in your face.
Then, she further revealed that it’s the first time that two choreographers (Saroj Khan and Remo D’souza) collaborated for her song. Madhuri was all praise for singer Shreya Ghoshal who sung the track, Ghar More Pardesiya.
Here are some excerpts from the conversation that further transpired:
We were simply amazed by the shot that shows you spinning in the song and also how the music reaches crescendo…
That’s the highlight of the song. Initially, we had planned to do the spin in one take, but it took 2 takes, however, that’s not because of me; the lights went off. Overall, the song was shot in 3 days. Also, the spinning part was Saroj Khan’s idea.
How have things changed for you in the dancing milieu, in the past few decades?
Earlier, there used to be rules like don’t waste the footage and also avoid doing retakes. Now, with digital cameras, everything has become smooth as there is no wastage of reel. You can do as many retakes as you want and so, dancing has become relatively easier.
What is your take on the dancers of this generation?
The movie subjects have changed, so we don’t see much scope for dance and I guess that’s the only reason. Otherwise, I think they all are pretty good at it.
Is Kalank the meatiest role for you so far, especially after you returned to films? The reason I ask this is because we see less of you now….
Aisa kuch nahin hai. You see, I have two kids, but yes, Kalank is a very complicated role which challenged and inspired me a lot and so, I immediately said yes to it.
Even directors have changed. Did they take time to understand what will suit you the best and hence many offers failed to inspire you?
Yes, but that's not the only reason. As I said I have 2 kids...that is always going to be my first priority.
We wish you the best for Kalank. It must be a great feeling that your last film Total Dhamaal ran away to the 100 crore club…
Yes, Total Dhamaal was a fun film. We had a blast shooting for it.
The results of Dhamaal at the box-office were unexpected especially if you take into consideration the harsh reviews the film got…
Look, every review is an individual perspective. The janta liked it and it's definitely a great feeling, as you said.
Parting shot. Rumour has it that you are doing Tanuj Garg and Atul Kasbekar’s next?
(Smiles) I don't know where all that started from.
