Achyut Potdar Passes Away At 91: The Cause Of ‘3 Idiots’ Actor’s Death Not Disclosed Yet

Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, known for his memorable roles in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, passed away on August 18 at the age of 91. The actor breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he was admitted following health complications. The exact cause of his death has not been disclosed. His final rites will be performed in Thane on August 19.

Potdar’s demise has left the Hindi and Marathi entertainment industries deeply saddened. Fans and colleagues from the film fraternity expressed their grief and extended condolences to his family. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta paid a heartfelt tribute, recalling how Potdar impressed him as Jaggu Dada’s father in Angaar and later worked with him in his directorial debut, Jayate. Mehta described him as an actor with impeccable timing and a sharp sense of humour.

Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, to a Marathi Brahmin family, Achyut Potdar’s journey was as inspiring as it was unconventional. After completing his graduation in Economics in 1961, he joined the Indian Army through an emergency commission during the India-China war and served until 1967, retiring as a Captain. Post his military service, he worked with the Indian Oil Corporation for 25 years, retiring in 1992. Alongside his professional career, Potdar actively participated in theatre and cultural activities, which eventually led him to the world of films.

He made his acting debut in 1980 with Govind Nihalani’s Aakrosh, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Smita Patil. Over the next four decades, he appeared in more than 125 films, leaving an indelible mark with supporting yet impactful roles. Among his most cherished performances was his role as a professor in the blockbuster 3 Idiots. He also featured in acclaimed films such as Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Rangeela, Parineeta, Vaastav, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator.

Apart from films, Potdar was also a familiar face on television, with roles in shows like Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs Tendulkar, and Bharat Ki Khoj.

Achyut Potdar’s illustrious career stands as a testament to his versatility and passion for acting. His contribution to cinema and television will be remembered for years to come.
