There’s growing buzz that Sai Pallavi may step in to replace Deepika Padukone in the highly anticipated sequel Kalki 2, the next chapter of director Nag Ashwin’s sci-fi mythological epic Kalki 2898 AD, which originally starred Deepika opposite Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan.
According to recent reports, Deepika, who played the pivotal character SUM-80 (Sumathi) in the first film, will not be returning for the sequel. Industry insiders say her exit came after discussions with the makers didn’t lead to an agreement on terms, and sources have claimed there were “differences” over the role and commitments required for the high-profile project.
In the wake of Deepika’s departure, Sai Pallavi — already enjoying acclaim for her pan-India appeal and a major role in the upcoming Ramayana — has emerged as a strong contender to take on the SUM-80 role. Some reports suggest that the makers feel she would be “a perfect fit” for the character and are close to finalising her for the part, though no official confirmation has been issued yet.
The sequel’s production is generating excitement in film circles, with shooting reportedly underway or about to begin, featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan once again as central figures.
Fans and trade observers have reacted strongly to the casting chatter, with many welcoming the possibility of Sai Pallavi joining the franchise because of her strong screen presence. However, until the makers make a formal announcement, the status of the casting remains speculative.
