It is a shame that we live in a society where sexual assault is a common reality for most women and even young girls are not spared. Now, Sonam Kapoor has added her to voice to those speaking up about their experiences.
Sonam has revealed that she was molested when she was younger.
The 31-year-old made the revelation in front of a round table of Bollywood actresses which included Vidya Balan, Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt and Radhika Apte.
Talking to journalist Rajeev Masand, Anil Kapoor's beti opened up about her experience.
"I know, I have been molested when I was younger and it's traumatizing," said an emotional Sonam.
The other actresses too chimed in about sexual violence against women, especially Vidya Balan whose latest Kahaani 2 was centered on the issue of child abuse.
The topic of sexual assault is a difficult one for most women because the shame and the blame is often placed squarely on the shoulder of the victim.
Sonam was also reportedly at the receiving end of some unwelcome attention when she was promoting Raanjhana with Dhanush and the incident had caused an uproar then.
Sonam is not the only actress who has opened up about sexual assault. Kalki Koechlin spoke about how she was sexually abused as a child at the age of 9 (NATIONAL SHAME! Kalki groped outside National Awards ceremony, May 5 2016).
