The legal proceedings in the high-profile death case of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg have taken a fresh turn. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Assam government on a bail plea filed by event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the case. The court has sought a response from the state authorities and is expected to hear the matter further by the end of July.

Mahanta approached the apex court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail application in May 2026. His petition challenges the High Court’s order and argues that there is no possibility of him absconding, as his passport and other important documents are already in the custody of the investigating agencies.

The case is linked to the death of Zubeen Garg during a yacht trip in Singapore in September 2025. Following the incident, multiple complaints were filed, leading to a detailed investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Assam government. The probe resulted in the arrest of several individuals, including Mahanta, who has remained in custody since October 2025.

According to reports, the SIT filed an extensive chargesheet and brought serious allegations against multiple accused in connection with the singer’s death. Investigators have maintained that the case involves significant questions that require detailed examination.

A bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Joymalya Bagchi issued the notice while hearing Mahanta’s plea. The court has now directed the Assam government to submit its response before the next hearing. The development marks another significant chapter in a case that continues to attract widespread public attention across the country.
