American actor James Ransone, best known for his work in The Wire and It: Chapter Two, has died by suicide at the age of 46 in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office. The official report stated that Ransone’s death on Friday, December 19, 2025, was the result of suicide by hanging, and there was no indication of foul play in the incident.
Ransone’s passing has drawn widespread attention, not only because of his memorable performances across film and television, but also in light of a recent social media post by his wife, Jamie McPhee, which has since gone viral. Days before his death, Jamie shared a fundraiser in support of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on her profile, aimed at raising awareness about mental health — a message that many have found poignant after the tragic news of his death.
Throughout his life, Ransone faced personal struggles, including battles with addiction. At age 27, he battled heroin addiction and accumulated significant debt, but he ultimately achieved sobriety and remained clean thereafter.
In 2021, Ransone publicly shared that he was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, revealing that he had been abused by his math tutor in 1992. He made the disclosure in an Instagram post addressing the alleged abuser, which brought further attention to the long-term impact of trauma on mental health.
James Ransone is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their two children, and his death has sparked renewed conversations about mental health support and awareness in the entertainment industry and beyond.
