Actress Drashti Dhami is one of the most established actors in the Hindi television industry. She is known for her portrayal of Geet and Madhubala on the small screen, and now aims to break the internet as Khanzada in The Empire.
The 36-year-old actress is basking in the success of her digital debut, the Nikkhil Advani helmed show ‘The Empire’, which premiered on Friday. The show also stars Kunal Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and Dino Morea in the lead roles.
Drashti is being applauded by the critics and her fans, for an impeccable performance. Reacting to the praises, the actress asserted that she is overwhelmed.
“So many people have messaged and called saying they loved the show and my performance. I remember waiting for the show to be out and it did get to me. There was a sense of relief that I had bagged the show and didn’t have to hunt for a project amidst the pandemic. It makes a difference. We worked on the show for two years and when it did, it was with a bang. I couldn’t have asked for more for my OTT debut. I feel proud of what I have done. I have made a mark,” shared Drashti Dhami in an interview with Hindustan Times.
In a career spanning 14 years, Drashti has carved a niche for herself in the television industry and has been a part of several iconic TV shows such as Madhubala, and Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani.
During the interview, Drashti pointed out that many of her close friends hadn’t watched any episodes of her serials but caught up on her OTT debut.
She said, “I love TV and I am what I am due to my work on TV. But many people don’t watch TV as they don’t resonate with serials. I am glad that OTT is a new and wonderful avenue open for so many actors like me. Having said that, it is a huge responsibility to do a TV show and to hold the attention of the audiences on TV everyday.”
Nikkhil Advani’s The Empire has been under scrutiny ever since the makers released the trailer of the show. The eight-episode magnum opus was instantly compared to the critically acclaimed international show, The Game of Thrones (GOT).
Dhami disagreed and explained that the show is not GOT. She also went on to contend that Indian history is very different.
Drashti continued, “Of course, it is always a compliment when you are compared to a universally acclaimed show. What we have achieved with our is that we have made one of the finest shows as compared to any other Indian show. I am on a high with all the love coming our way.”
After its release, a section of social media users accused the makers of glorifying the Mughals and asked everyone to boycott the show and uninstall the Hotstar app.
