Amrita Rao, who rose to fame in the early 2000s and was especially admired for her performance in Vivah, has revealed in a recent podcast that the success of that film led to an overwhelming amount of romantic attention — including proposals and even a disturbing letter.

According to Amrita, she began receiving many marriage proposals from NRIs. People would send family photos, snapshots of themselves beside their cars, sometimes with dogs, accompanied by messages saying things like, “mujhse shaadi karlo” (please marry me). She laughed at how frequent this became, wondering aloud, “Kya log hain yeh!” (“What kind of people are these!”)

One especially alarming incident she recounted involved a fan who sent her a letter written in blood. Amrita described this as “very scary.” There was also a case where a man would wait at the telephone booth outside her residence, calling, and expecting — or putting her parents in the position of answering. “It got a little much,” she said.

Amrita also spoke about a more difficult career phase. Despite starring in successful films, she said she wasn’t getting the kind of roles she desired. Most offers came with conditions — such as required kissing scenes — and she felt stereotyped or boxed in. “I didn’t want to attend parties, award shows or be seen. I just wanted to do my work and come home. I was in a lonely space.”

Amidst this turbulence, she met her husband RJ Anmol, at what she describes as a very critical point in her life.  Now, she has made a comeback with Jolly LLB 3, though she admits her screen time in the film is limited. Fans continue to hope to see her in a full-fledged lead role again.
