Singer Nick Jonas has opened up about the emotional and frightening experience surrounding the premature birth of his daughter Malti Marie, whom he shares with wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The couple welcomed Malti in January 2022 via a surrogate, months earlier than expected, and Jonas has now shared details of how intense those early days were.
Speaking on the On Purpose podcast, Jonas said he and Priyanka were preparing for an April arrival when they suddenly got a call that Malti was coming much sooner. “She came into the world under, sort of, very intense circumstances,” he said. Recalling the moment, Jonas described how they rushed to the hospital and saw their daughter weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces and appearing “purple basically.””
Immediately after birth, Malti needed urgent care; Jonas credited the NICU nurses with saving her life, calling them “angels” for how quickly they resuscitated and intubated her.
Because Malti was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple had to be extremely careful and dedicated their time at the hospital in 12-hour shifts for three and a half months, taking turns to be by her side. “I can almost smell the hospital even now,” Jonas said, describing how visceral the experience was, both comforting and frightening as they watched other families face similar struggles.
During her lengthy stay in the NICU, Malti underwent six blood transfusions and gradually began to gain strength. Eventually, after months of care and persistence, she was well enough to go home.
Jonas also reflected on the challenge of parenting during that time, highlighting the emotional conversations he and Priyanka had while supporting each other through one of the toughest periods of their lives.
