Alia Bhatt has reportedly postponed her anticipated debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival due to escalating political tensions between India and Pakistan. A source close to the development shared that Bhatt’s appearance at the festival’s opening ceremony was reconsidered after discussions with her team. “Alia was supposed to walk the red carpet at the opening of the festival. However, given the current climate and rising tensions, the decision was made to hold back,” the insider said.
The actor was slated to represent a prominent global beauty brand at Cannes, sharing space with other international celebrities such as Eva Longoria and Viola Davis. While her participation later during the festival remains a possibility, it is currently uncertain. “She may still attend later in the festival, but as of now, her red carpet appearance has been postponed,” the source added.
This decision aligns with her stance on being sensitive to national sentiment. “At a time when the mood back home is tense, appearing on an international stage might not send the right message,” explained the source. Bhatt’s representatives are yet to issue an official statement.
Despite this, Alia’s international presence remains strong. She made her Met Gala debut in 2023 in a white Prabal Gurung ensemble that received significant attention. On the work front, she continues to be active in Indian cinema, most recently seen in the 2024 release Jigra, and is currently preparing for Alpha, an action spy film set in the YRF Spy Universe, which is scheduled to release in December 2025.
Bhatt’s decision to pause her Cannes debut, though disappointing for fans, reflects her sensitivity to India’s current socio-political scenario and her commitment to aligning her global appearances with national sentiment.
