The term 'Gu' in Guru stands for darkness, and 'Ru' means removal of darkness, ultimately, a guru is someone who removes all darkness from our lives. And they are certainly one of the most important beings in an individual’s life and Indians have dedicated a day to celebrate and cherish the teachers, mentors and all those who impart learning and help nurture skills. This year, Guru Purnima will be celebrated tomorrow i.e on July 13, 2022.
The occasion is zealously celebrated as a festival by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists in India, Nepal and Bhutan. Traditionally, the festival is celebrated by Buddhists to commemorate Gautam Buddha’s first sermon to his first five disciples in Uttar Pradesh’s Sarnath. Interestingly, Hindus and Jains also celebrate this festival to revere their teachers.
Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadha, which is from June to July.
