ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was concluded in Melbourne on Sunday. Unfortunately, heartbreaking and sad scenes were witnessed when India lost to Australia as they were clean bowled for 99 during their 185-run chase against Australia in Melbourne. Soon after the last wicket fell, Shafali Verma was seen sobbing on the ground and her teammates Harmanpreet Kaur and Harleen Deol consoled Shafali on the pitch.
The audience saw Shafali’s family holding Verma ji ki beti placard, waiting to be flashed at the right moment, which never came. Shafali’s mom Parveen Verma, who also couldn’t hold back her tears, told Hindustan Times, “Jo meri beti ne kiya, mujhe garv hai. Har ne baad hi jitna seekha jata hai (I’m proud of my daughter. You only learn to win after you lose),” while the founder of the academy Ashwani Kumar said, “After India had reached the 2018 T20 World Cup semi-final our academy had seen a surge in girl trainees.”
Meanwhile, when India batsmen were seen sobbing over losing the first ICC women’s first T20 World Cup finale, former cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi tweeted a message of condolence. For one of his tweets he received backlash when he said that girls should try and avoid tears in public. His Tweet read, “No need to feel despondent India..U did very well to reach the Finals..& U had plenty of sunshine in Australia..better luck & determination next time..a personal request..girls pl try & avoid showing tears n public..not after losing anyway..tears are a personal property fr ever!”
