Singer-actor Prashant Tamang, best known for winning Indian Idol Season 3, was brought to Siliguri on Monday after he passed away at his residence in New Delhi. The mortal remains of the 43-year-old artist arrived at Bagdogra Airport in the morning, where family, political leaders and fans gathered to pay their respects. His body is expected to be taken to Darjeeling for a public viewing ceremony at Chowrasta so well-wishers can offer their final tributes before the last rites.
Prominent figures from the entertainment world and local leadership were present during the solemn reception of Tamang’s remains. According to Gorkha Shaheed Sewa Samiti (GSSS) National President Andrew Gurung, the rituals planned in Darjeeling will include opportunities for friends, family and followers to honour the late singer’s memory before his cremation.
BJP MP Raju Bista, who was among those paying tribute, expressed deep sorrow over Tamang’s sudden departure. He said, “It is a great loss for us. Prashant Tamang did a great job with his singing and his talent as an artist. He did a great job of uniting all the Gorkha people. We will always be indebted to him for this. The whole country is with his family during this difficult time. He has a very young daughter, and his wife works at Air India. The family lived in Delhi. We will stand by his family.”
Delhi Police confirmed the body was brought in after an MLC (medico-legal case) report was filed at Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, and the remains have since been sent for a post-mortem at DDU Hospital to determine the exact cause of death.
Tamang’s wife, Martha Aley, addressed circulating speculation, stating unequivocally that his passing was not suspicious. “It was a natural death. He was in his sleep when he left us. I was right beside him at that time,” she said, and thanked supporters for their condolences from across the world.
