Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav’s bail hearing in his long-running cheque bounce and debt case was deferred to Monday, February 16, by the Delhi High Court, with the actor set to remain in custody at Tihar Jail until then. The matter came up for a hearing again around 2.30 pm on Thursday, during which Yadav’s counsel informed the court that he had been unable to reach his client and asked for more time. The court agreed to adjourn the bail hearing and also directed the complainant to file a reply to the bail application in the interim.

During the proceedings, the court reviewed earlier aspects of the case and made critical observations about how it has unfolded. At one point, the bench remarked, “You have gone to jail because you didn’t honour your own commitment.” The court noted that on at least two dozen occasions the actor had assured the bench that he would meet his repayment obligations and fulfil the commitments he made, but those promises were not kept.

Yadav’s legal troubles originate from a loan of ₹5 crore he took in 2010 to fund his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata, which failed at the box office. Issues with repayment snowballed into a prolonged legal battle, and including accumulated interest, the outstanding liability reportedly climbed to nearly ₹9 crore. The court has previously observed that only ₹75 lakh had been deposited so far, leaving a significant balance unpaid.

Ahead of the adjourned hearing, Yadav, who surrendered to the court and is currently serving time, has received financial support and offers of assistance from several figures in the film industry, including actors and musicians who have publicly extended help as he attempts to resolve his dues.
