Pritam: Romance Is A Must If You Want A Complete Album

Pritam Chakraborty (better known as just Pritam) deserved the Best Music Composer award for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil from every quarter. We caught up with him in his office a few days ago to present the trophy.

Excerpts from the conversation that followed:

Congratulations for winning the SpotboyE Salaam Best Music Composer for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM)…
Thank you, and I love the SpotboyE Salaam trophy.

Did you expect so many awards for ADHM? Have you kept a count of the trophies you have won for this film?
(Smiles) I think almost every award function felicitated me for ADHM. But honestly, I didn’t expect so much appreciation, love and euphoria over my songs in that film. Trust me, it is to be all seen to be believed. All the songs- Title Song, Bulleya, Alizeh, Break-Up Song or Channa Mereya- clicked in a big way.

I think I owe it to Karan Johar. It is very important for a director to involve himself in the music of his film so that he can guide the music team keeping the emotions in the story in mind. Karan did that beautifully.

During his brief, he explained the song situations to me very vividly. I somehow knew that the audiences will connect with ADHM as it had a lot of angst and longing- the two vital ingredients of a love story.

Above all, how I can forget Ranbir Kapoor in ADHM? He enhances every scene so much that even his songs tend to get enhanced.

I always wanted to work with Karan Johar and it happened. I have worked in Aditya Chopra as a producer but now I wish I get a chance in his directorial. Karan and Adi are always spoken about in the same breath...

bajrangi bhaijaan and dangal

Go on...
I think I worked very less for ADHM. I was very excited when I got a call for Karan Johar's directorial. After I was narrated the script, I gave Karan Johar 5-6 songs and in our first sitting itself, he locked Channa Mereya, Alizeh and Bulleya. I got nervous. I felt I should work out more songs, but Karan Johar's conviction is of another level altogether. His liking and understanding of music is fabulous and it matches with people's taste, which is why all his films have good music. I am happy to be a part of that legacy.

Tell me, why don't we get a complete album like ADHM frequently these days...
I think the story needs to lend itself to the music. ADHM had lots of love and emotion, which set the tone for a complete album. Like another one that comes to mind is the one I did four years ago- Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Four years is a long time...
It is, but as I said you need a story which orients itself to music. Where are the stories of such kind? Films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Dangal cannot have complete albums.

Are you telling me that romance is an essential requirement for a complete album?
Yes, very much. Can you think of a complete album which did not have romance?

Which song of ADHM is your favourite?
Alizeh.

It was not a part of the film...

Often, the good song which is not promoted becomes my favourite. Like how a special, talented child is his mother's favourite. Alizeh did not get its due as it didn't come into the limelight.
