As a child, Debaloy Bhattacharya was fascinated by Dracula. That love has stayed with him well into adulthood, and has inspired him to create his next film Dracula Sir. The director explains, “I have loved Dracula for my entire childhood. I was fascinated by the character. He has haunted me all my life.” He adds, “I feel that beyond all the bloody lore lies a lonely man. I wanted to create a new myth of Dracula, which would be set in Bengal. The film is my search for a Bangali Dracula. He does not have a Scandinavian castle or snowy landscapes.”
What are the features of Debaloy Bhattacharya’s Dracula? The director says, “He is an underdog, who has been bullied all his life for his unnatural appearance. He is an introvert who suffers from an inferiority complex because of his large canines. Then something happens, which triggers him to believe that he is becoming a vampire.”
Dracula Sir marks actress and Member of Parliament Mimi Chakraborty’s return to the silver screen after a long gap. Understandably, there is added interest in the film thanks to Mimi. Debaloy says, “I believe that Mimi has been seen in similar roles in almost her entire film career. She is completely different in Dracula Sir. There is a melancholia and a vulnerability in her eyes, which have shone in my film. Here she plays a character from the Seventies.”
Working with Anirban Bhattacharya has been a delightful experience for Debaloy. He says, “Anirban is a treat for a director. I don’t think anyone other than Anirban could have pulled off the intensely dark character of Dracula. He has a certain swagger, and is a multi-layered actor.”
