Indraadip Das Gupta is a well known and well loved member of the Bengali film industry. He has been working as a music director for almost three decades and has now branched into film-making. His debut film Kedara, which has won a National Award, was shown at the KIFF (Kolkata International Film Festival) in 2018. It tells the story of Narasingha, a ventriloquist. Kedara is now set for commercial release on 1st November. Indraadip reveals, “I’ve been a student of sound for decades. Kedara is my tribute to a lesser known department of sound. In fact, sound will play a big part in all my films.” Indraadip feels that his background as a music director will allow him to use sound more in the narrative of his films.
Kedara originally had one show at the KIFF. But the organisers had to arrange another show on audience demand. Indraadip says, “The film was part of the KIFF special jury mention. It had one show. There was so much buzz around Kedara that audiences even sat on the floor to watch the film. Eventually a second show was arranged on public demand.”
Kedara rests on the able shoulders of director cum actor Kaushik Ganguly, who plays Narasingha and Rudranil Ghosh, who plays Keshto. Drowned in loneliness, the jobless ventriloquist Narasingha strikes up a friendship with Keshto. It is rather a brave subject for a debut film, though Indraadip is of a different opinion. The music director turned film-maker says, “Does my career graph show that I’ve been anything but brave? As a film-maker I want to tell poignant stories. True, Kedara was not an easy film to attempt. But I was convinced about the subject.”
