Koel Mallick: I Am Fortunate To Be Able To Portray Strong Characters
Koel Mallick is playing Ruby Chatterjee in Friday release Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan. After her super success playing detective Mitin Mashi, the Bong beauty is back in another strong woman avatar
Gone are the days when being a heroine in Tollywood meant playing endless damsels in distress, wilting in beautiful pain, until the hero comes to save her. Bengali heroines are getting more powerful on screen. Koel Mallick is perhaps the best example of this new trend in Bangla films. Her Mitin Mashi was a no-nonsense sleuth who wasn’t afraid to take on goons. The film did very well after its Durga Puja 2019 release. And now Koel is back with another strong character in Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan. She plays Dr Ruby Chatterjee in the adventure thriller.
“I am fortunate to be getting these characters, of women who are strong and unafraid to take on a challenge. Its fascinating as an actor to be able to portray these kinds of roles,” says Koel Mallick. She adds, “I think its a reflection of the changing society. Women now are more powerful than ever. They are not holding back.”
Mitin Mashi was packed with action. But Koel Mallick says that Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan will not be as action-packed. “There is a lot of running, jumping, things like that. But not the hardcore action sequences of Mitin Mashi. For that film I had to take special training,” smiles Koel.
Talking about her character Ruby in Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan, Koel says, “She is a doctor who goes on a search for Red Mercury, a mythical compound. In her journey she meets Bimal and Kumar and the three join forces.”
