Sritama Dey: Rapists Should Be Hanged Or Given Worse Punishment, Says Young Actress

Indians have been hit hard by the horrific rape and murder of veterinarian Dr Priyanka Reddy in Hyderabad last week. The incident has brought back fear in the hearts of Indian women. Sritama Dey is no exception. The young actress is a popular face in the Bangla web space, with Dhanbad Blues (2018) and Charitraheen (2018) in her CV. She has portrayed bold characters on screen and is bold in speech in real life too. Asked about her reaction to the recent tragic incident, Sritama says, “Our country definitely needs stricter rape laws. Rapists should hang or face even worse punishment.”
As a working woman and particularly an actress, late nights are common for Sritama. “Of course I feel scared when I have to work late. I feel unsafe, because unfortunately the fear of rape has been woven into the fabric of our society. But still we have to go out and earn our living, along with millions of other women,” says Sritama. She adds, “Restricting women’s boundaries can never be the answer. We need to deal strictly with the perpetrators.”
That is why she demands harsh punishment for rapists. She says, “India has more recorded cases of rape than most other countries. But what do we do to these perverts? We hear about their arrests and then, nothing. What happens next? We need to hang the rapists or worse, so that it can set an example. We need to instill the fear of death in these people. Maybe then the rate of rape will decline.”
