Sonnalli Seygall: ‘The Failure Of Jai Mummy Di Is Like A Break-Up For Me’- EXCLUSIVE
Sonnalli Seygall is upset with the dismal performance of her latest release, Jai Mummy Di that starred her alongside Sunny Singh. In an exclusive interview, the actress bares her heart out as she discusses what probably could have gone wrong.

Jai Mummy Di didn’t live up to expectations. What went wrong?
Honestly, I don't know the answer to this question because along with our teammates, I had high expectations from the film. Obviously, I believed in the film, worked hard- but it didn’t work.

Do you think what was envisaged to you wasn’t how it turned out at the execution level?
See, somewhere the whole expectation of a Luv Ranjan film is also about youth connect. I feel to a large extent, the youth hasn't connected to the film. From the feedback that I have received so far, I in fact see that a lot of people in the age group of 40-50 have connected more. I think the youth expected more out of a Luv Ranjan film. This could be one reason. Talking about the execution, yes, at the script level it was really funny and a strong script. The way it turned out to be, maybe was different.

There wasn't enough buzz and promotions around Jai Mummy Di. Do you agree? Could this also be one reason for its weak performance?
This is something I feel about every film of mine. Whichever movie I work on, I feel like we should have publicised more. So yes, maybe if this film was promoted well, it could have reached more people. A couple of them even asked me when is Jai Mummy Di releasing after it had released.

Don’t you agree that the makers could have come up with a more catchy title?
No, the title was apt and it was quite quirky to get the right attention. I don't think we went wrong with the title, it's more in terms of how the film panned out in the end.

The title says Jai Mummy Di but the mothers (Poonam Dhillon, Supriya Pathak) were hardly seen…
Yes, I too feel that maybe a little more of their fights could have added more value as people had expected it. And why not? When you say Jai Mummy Di, one will definitely expect that the story would have the mothers in the forefront. This is also the feedback that I have received that maybe somewhere the mothers’ involvement with us should have been more.

You have quite a few kissing scenes in the film. Would you be comfortable with nudity if the script demands, say that of a web show?
Nowadays, the audience is smart enough to understand where a kissing scene is integral to the film and where it isn't. Even if you see on web shows, the ones that are doing well, the intimate scenes or the nudity flows with the whole story and it doesn't look out of place. I'm very comfortable with most things. I don't have an issue with intimate scenes. It's just important that how it is shot. In fact, I’m in talks for a web show for a well-known OTT platform.

Do you like web shows also because they do not involve censorship?
Yes, I was so shocked to see that in our film, I had a scene which had words like ‘sex’ and ‘BDSM’. While the former word was retained, the word BDSM was beeped out. So, nobody got the humour of the line. The whole pun of the scene fell flat.

Okay, so tell us what’s next for you on the cards?
I emotionally invested in Jai Mummy Di. You put in so much of hardwork and then suddenly, the film doesn't perform. The first day I was in denial. It's almost like I'm going through a break-up right now. But, one side of me is very grateful and blessed because there are 3 things for which I'm in talks with- but I can't reveal much about it. What happens is when your film doesn't work, the fight doesn't get over. I still have to wait and choose from what's offered to me. If this film would have worked, I could have probably called the shots and said that I want to do an action flick next.
