First Day First Show: Shahid-Kangana-Saif Starrer Rangoon Opens To Packed Theatres
So far so good. Vishal Bhardwaj’s period drama has lured the crowds into the theatres and the audience gave a thumbs-up to the efforts of Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan
Vishal Bhardwaj’s
magnum opus, Rangoon, hit theatres today and is off to a good start at the
box-office. The film starring Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor
is a love triangle set in the backdrop of World War 2.
The star cast and the unique story seems to have got the moviegoers’ attention
as the film opened to packed theatres. The morning shows in a few suburban
theatres had about 90-93% occupancy. This comes after a lacklustre show last
Friday where three new films (Ghazi Attack, Running Shaadi, Irada) could not
even garner 5% occupancy.
The audience were
all praise for the performances of Kangana, Shahid and Saif. However, a few
people did complain that the story wasn't relatable while others maintained
that adding a love triangle to the Second World War and the Indian movement for
Independence, created a confusing narrative.
The people at the ticket windows seemed happy as they hadn't had such high
footfall in the morning shows for over two weeks now.
Vishal Bhardwaj’s films tend to start slow and then pick up, thanks to
word-of-mouth publicity. We have seen that happen for Maqbool (2003), Omkara
(2006), Kaminey (2009) and Haider (2014). This time Rangoon is off to a good
start but will it be able to maintain the momentum? Let’s wait and watch.
