10 Bollywood films that leaked online before their release

Great Grand Masti, Sultan, Udta Punjab – the list continues to grow

When Great Grand Masti leaked online 3 weeks before the film’s release (Video: Great Grand Masti leaked online, Jul 5), the makers had no option but to bring the film’s release forward to July 15 instead of the scheduled date – July 22. With the Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani-starrer having hit the screens yesterday, the makers have organised a press conference today where they will be addressing the issue of piracy.

Bollywood movies are being leaked online at an alarming frequency, making it an occupational hazard for the film industry. It’s unfortunate that the cast and crew of a film work on the project for almost 2 years and find their hard work going down the drain when the movie makes its way online before its official release.

Of late, too many films have borne the brunt of piracy. Take a look:

Sultan (2016)

The Ali Abbas Zafar-directed film made its way online a night before its release on July 6. However, Yash Raj Films restricted the leak to just 3 hours. Starring Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma, Amit Sadh and Randeep Hooda in the lead roles, the film’s business wasn’t affected by the leak. Sultan is already the biggest hit of the year so far and is on its way to becoming one of the biggest blockbusters.

Udta Punjab (2016)

The Abhishek Chaubey-directed film leaked online a couple of days before its release on June 17 (What the Fu**! Sabotage!! Udta Punjab leaked online, Jun 15). The movie’s lead stars – Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh – requested fans not to watch the leaked version and go to the theatres instead. While the film still stayed strong and crossed the 50-crore mark within the first week, many felt that the collections would have been higher if not for the leak. In an interview to SpotboyE.com, Alia Bhatt rued how Udta Punjab could have done better had it not leaked on the Internet (Alia Bhatt talks about Sidharth Malhotra, Katrina Kaif, Parineeti Chopra and Udta Punjab, Jun 27).

Mohalla Assi (2015)

This satire got into Censorship trouble right after the trailer was released. The Chandraprakash Dwivedi-directed film, which is yet unreleased, made its way online last year. It had Sunny Deol, Sakshi Tanwar and Ravi Kissan in lead roles.

Manjhi: The Mountain Man (2015)

The Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer was leaked online almost 10 days before its scheduled release on August 21. It was a biopic based on the life of Dasrath Manjhi, who single-handedly carved a road thorough a huge mountain – a feat that took him about 22 years. The film, though appreciated widely, failed to make an impact on the box-office.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

Another Salman Khan film that fought piracy and emerged triumphant. Kabir Khan’s ambitious project was leaked online much before its release on July 17. Fortunately, the audience still rushed to theatres in hordes to watch the film. Today, it stands as the second highest grosser at the box-office after PK.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (2015)

Sushant Singh Rajput’s detective film wasn’t available online in its entirety but its climax scene was leaked a couple of days before its release (April 3). The whodunit got a cold response from the audience. Whether the poor performance can be attributed to the leak is a different story altogether.

Ugly (2014)

The Anurag Kashyap-directed film had to be released instantly on December 26 as it had made its way online. The film was originally slated to release a few months later. However, Kashyap took the call to release it while Aamir Khan’s PK was at the peak of its success, because he knew that it was almost impossible to stop people from watching the film online. Sadly, the thriller, which received rave reviews from critics, tanked at the box-office.

Paa (2009)

The Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Abhishek Bachchan starrer was available online on the day of its release (December 4). In another case of a good film standing its ground despite being plagued with piracy, the movie not only fared well at the box-office but also managed to bag 4 National Film Awards.

Tera Kya Hoga Johny (2008)

Portions of the Sudhir Mishra-directed film were leaked right during the post-production stage itself. The movie was finally released on December 31, 2010 – almost 2 years after its completion. A sequel to Johnny Gaddar (2007), it starred Neil Nitin Mukesh and Soha Ali Khan in lead roles.

Paanch (2003)

Anurag Kashyap’s directorial debut got into Censorship trouble and never made it to the theatres. It was considered too violent and therefore, has been not cleared by the CBFC to date. A preview copy of the crime thriller, starring Kay Kay Menon and Tejaswini Kolhapure, was leaked online in 2010.
