Age has never been a matter of concern for Indian heroes. Be it Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood or Mollywood, we are used to actors in their 40s and even 50s romancing heroines almost half their age. It’s almost as if our superstars are timeless.
However, a recent trend has given us some scope for hope -- many of these heroes are warming up to roles and characters closer to their real age. Here are the latest examples:
Shah Rukh Khan
SRK will play Alia Bhatt’s father in the yet-untitled Gauri Shinde film. Can you believe that -- the King of Romance will now appear on screen as a grown-up girl’s dad! Well, he just turned 50 last year and it looks like Shah Rukh is extremely confident and comfortable playing his age. We can’t wait.
Rajinikanth has been playing hero to the hilt for over three decades now. Even at 65, he came up with films like Kochadaiiyaan and Lingaa, which saw him romancing Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha. To think of it, the girls are less than half his age! Director Pa. Ranjith has finally decided to let Rajini ‘grow up’ in his upcoming film, Kabali. The movie has Thalaiva playing an aged don.
Aamir Khan played a collegian in Rang De Basanti (2006) and 3 Idiots (2009) when he was over 40. But the ‘young hero’ is all set to take a big leap this year end with Dangal. The Nitesh Tiwari film has him portraying a 56-year-old wrestler. Now, that’s pretty close to his real age (50)! The perfectionist that he is, Aamir has even piled on kilos for his role in the Mahavir Singh Phogat biopic.
He may be 56, but Anil Kapoor doesn’t look beyond 45, does he? So, it was a pleasant surprise to see him play Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra’s dad in Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do last year. Totally Jhakaas, Anil. When will we see you playing Sonam’s dad on-screen?
It’s common talk in Bollywood that Ajay Devgn is too apprehensive about aging on-screen. But, when he was approached with a fabulous script like Drishyam, the 46-year-old actor changed his mind. The Nishikant Kamat film (2015) saw him playing dad to two daughters, one of them a teenager. We hear, his next directorial Shivaay will also have him playing father to a young girl. A good change, hai na?
