Born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, Sridevi started her tryst with the camera quite early in life. She began as a child artiste and soon became one of South India’s topmost heroines. Her fame soon reached Bollywood, and she became an overnight sensation with a string of blockbusters under her belt. Today, on her 53rd birthday, let’s go down memory lane and check out some of her most memorable Hindi films.

Sadma (1983)

This Balu Mahendra film had Sri playing a girl who, after an accident, regresses into childhood. This was her most nuanced performance. The film was a remake of the Tamil original Moondram Pirai, in which her performance was even better.

Jaanbaaz (1986)

Sridevi may have had a very small role in this Feroze Khan film, but her towering screen presence was simply outstanding. Her dance -- in a reddish chiffon sari -- to the tune of Har Kisiko Nahin Milta still lingers in our imagination.

Nagina (1986)

Who could have thought of Sridevi as a snake-woman? Although this Harmesh Malhotra movie was pathetic, it was her fantastic portrayal of the slithering ‘Nagin’ which audiences remember till date. Her dance naumber Main Teri Dushman can’t ever be erased from our memories.

Mr. India (1987)

Sridevi’s portrayal of the perky journalist inspired an entire generation of girls to follow the career. Her Charlie Chaplin impersonation sequence, her Hawaa Hawaii antics, and the sensual dance to Kaate nahin kat te are simply impeccable. No wonder, this Boney Kapoor film was a super hit.

Chandni (1989)

One look at this Yash Chopra film and you’ll realise how subtle Sri’s emotive skills were. Her knock-out performance straightway made her the highest-paid actress of the era. The (title) character showcased the full range of Sridevi’s skills.

Chaalbaaz (1989)

Her perky avatar continued even in this Pankaj Parashar film. Sridevi wowed audiences with her double role, and she excelled in both -- as the docile girl, who was oppressed by her family, and the tomboyish one, who does everything to protect her twin.

Lamhe (1991)

This bold love story, directed by Yash Chopra, was way ahead of its times, and Sridevi was at her best in it. She played a girl who dared to love a man old enough to be her father -- something no other actress would have easily agreed to. Sri played both the mother and the daughter with equal aplomb. After Chandni, it was only in this film that the whole spectrum of her acting talents was explored.

Army (1996)

Sridevi played a gender-reversal of Sanjeev Kumar’s character in Sholay, where she hires mercenaries to take avenge her husband’s murder. The scene where her husband’s dead body is brought in front of her is amazing. Within seconds, Sridevi’s giggling dismissal turns into shock and finally a break down. This film was directed by Raam Shetty.

Judaai (1997)

This was her last film before getting married, and she made sure that audiences are going to miss her impeccable performances. Sridevi played a small town girl, who goes to the extent of even selling her husband just to become rich and powerful. The frustrated distress that immense wealth brings along was beautifully portrayed by her in this Raj Kanwar film.

English Vinglish (2012)

After almost 15 years when she came back to the screens, she was no longer the perky girl. But her subtle portrayal of an Indian homemaker -- someone who is looked down upon by her family because she isn’t able to speak English properly -- left the audience speechless. This Gauri Shinde film was a big hit for the right reasons.

SpotboyE.com wishes the superbly talented actress “A Very Happy Birthday”.
