Having started her singing career at the tender age of 10, Asha Bhosle has come a long way. Being from the Mangeshkar family, music was in her blood. But it wasn’t easy to step out of her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar’s shadow and make a name for herself in the music industry. However, with her inimitable talent, that sensuous voice and pure dedication, Asha tai (as she is fondly called) slowly and steadily managed to carve a niche for herself. With numerous chartbusters under her belt, she went on to win several Filmfare Awards and two National Awards. Her popularity attained such heights that she would sweep away awards at every award function. Finally, in 1979, the celebrated singer requested the award show officials to not consider her for awards anymore and thereby give the newer singers a chance. Having spanned a career of over six decades, she is a force to reckon with today.
Her personal life saw a few ups and downs. After a failed first marriage to Ganpatrao Bhosle, she completely immersed herself in her music and concentrated solely on her career. However, love came knocking on the door again in the form of RD Burman and the two tied the knot in 1980. Together, the legendary music composer and the singer gave the Indian music industry some of the biggest hits of all time.
