Another year comes to an end and what a year it was. From surprise weddings to top stars failing at the box-office, this year saw a lot. Here's taking a look at what kept us hooked...
Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma's wedding was undoubtedly one of highlights of the year. Held in the Italian town of Tuscany, Virushka had a well-planned wedding on December 11. The pics of the wedding literally broke the Internet and all everyone could talk about was Virushka.
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus, Padmavati, was all set to hit theatres on December 1. The film has been embroiled in one controversy after another ever since it went on floors. However, things gathered momentum once the trailer and songs were made live on social media. Several protests followed. Few states banned the release, leading to the makers voluntarily deferring the release of the magnum opus. The film is now tentatively set to hit theatres on the Valentine's Day weekend.
Ever since SpotboyE broke the story about exes Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan slapping legal notices on each other, the actors have provided enough fodder for gossip mongers. However, the two continue to indulge in a war of words. Just when we thought that the matter had died down, Kangana decided to go to Rajat Sharma's Aap Ki Adalat. In a 1.5 hour interview, she blasted Hrithik and put out several questions about their relationship. Hrithik, on his part, also came out and gave an interview to Arnab Goswami where he refuted all claims levied by Kangana. It got murkier when Kangana's sister Rangoli spit fire on Hrithik and his family via her Twitter account. All said and done, the promotional interview of Kangana for Simran didn't help the movie's ticket-sale and it turned out to be a big dud at the box-office.
17 years after Priyanka Chopra won the Miss World, Manushi Chhillar got home the coveted crown. People from all walks of life began congratulating her on the win, and her videos and pics started going viral. It was indeed a proud moment for the country. She returned back to India on November 26 and had a number of well-wishers waiting at the airport who welcomed her with a traditional Indian aarti.
Zareen Khan blasted the makers of Aksar 2 for 'torturing' her during the making of the film. In an exclusive interview to SpotboyE, the actress said that they reshot her original scenes and compelled her to wear skimpy clothes, and didn't clear the dues of her staff. More so, when Zareen boycotted the premiere of Aksar 2, the makers started putting out false stories in the press claiming that Zareen was a tantrum queen. Post this, the actress lambasted them for taking her to a promotional event in Delhi where no proper arrangements were in place which led to her being almost molested while the makers happily enjoyed beer and chicken. Zareen detached herself from the film completely.
Salman Khan was on a career high after blockbuster hits like Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) and Sultan (2016). People were expecting his next-in-line to break all records set previously. Sadly, Tubelight turned out to be a cold turkey, and failed miserably at the box-office. So much so, Salman had to even reimburse distributors' money. People were just recovering from the box-office failure of Tubelight, when came Shah Rukh Khan's Jab Harry Met Sejal, which did nothing to improve the situation. The dual failure of Salman and Shah Rukh at the box-office created huge losses for the film industry this year, and it became a talking point almost throughout the year.
Pahlaj Nihalani was a filmmaker's nightmare. However, he maintained that he was simply following the Cinematograph Act 1952. Sitting at the top of the CBFC, he chopped films right, left and center. When Smriti Irani was shifted to the I&B ministry, from Textile, the first major change she did was to throw out Pahlaj from the CBFC throne. A whole new set of members were appointed including Vidya Balan under the leadership of Prasoon Joshi, and life seems to be slightly more sorted for filmmakers ever since. Let’s hope it stays that way.
17-year-old Zaira Wasim was allegedly molested on a Delhi-Mumbai flight. A traumatised Zaira posted a video on Instagram, wherein she narrated the harrowing incident that took place on-board the Air Vistara flight, tears rolling down her cheeks. Zaira narrated that a man who was sitting behind her, namely Vikas Sachdeva, was rubbing his foot against her back & neck while she was half asleep. After verifying the details from Zaira, the police arrested Vikas from his house. A few days later, Vikas was sent to the Taloja jail. Finally he was released on bail, and he has his next hearing on January 2.
Starlet Arpita Tiwari and her boyfriend Pankaj Jadhav had arrived at the 19-storey Manavsthal Heights around 3 am on the night of December 12 to visit a common friend, who lived on the 15th floor. Jadhav said they went to sleep around 4 am. Around 7 am on December 13, Aprita's body was found in the second floor duct between 2 buildings. It seems to be a Pratyusha Banerjee Part 2. Police is still investigating the matter as there are reports stating that she may have been murdered because she refused to have sex with the men in that house. Pink Part 2, doesn't it seem like that too?
After Virat-Anushka's secret wedding, its seems that lot of B-Town starlets decided to go the same route. Surveen Chawla shared a picture on her Instagram on December 27 where she was seen dancing with her husband Akshay Thakker romantically. The actress wrote: “And just like that, right in the middle of an extra-ordinary life, love gave us a fairy tale… #Married #bliss #EternalLove #GiveUsYourLove&Blessings (sic).” It was later revealed that Surveen was married in an Italian chapel way back in 2015, and she revealed it only now. Also, Ileana D'Cruz took to Instagram to share a picture of Christmas celebrations where she referred to Andrew Kneebone as her 'hubby'.
Karan Johar brought home two lovely kids on March 4 through surrogacy. Karan had been wanting to do it for long. He had often spoken about it in his interviews and writings and finally he went for it this year. The son is named Yash, clearly after Karan's father Yash Johar and his mentor Yash Chopra - the two men who were closest to him. The daughter goes by the name Roohi - Karan's mother's name Hiroo smartly arranged.
IFFI is one of the most respected film festivals in India. It's run by the I&B ministry and thus a lot of great films are brought forward every year. However, this year, it got a bit messy. The film festival was supposed to screen Sexy Durga and Nude, which were somehow removed from the final festival schedule. After protests from the filmmakers, the chairman of IFFI, Sujoy Ghosh, resigned followed by a panel member, Apoorva Asrani. The whole issue made a lot of noise and got tongues wagging at the government's interference in today's cinema.
Vikas Bahl was implicated in a sex scandal earlier this year. It resulted with Anurag Kashyap getting angry and fighting with Vikas. Reports also suggested that Anurag demanded Vikas' ouster from the production house Phantom.
