When Bollywood stars fell victim to social media impostors

Here's the latest update from the world of Bollywood. We bet you wouldn't want to miss this. Read on for details... Rani Mukerji’s recent case isn't the first example of celebrity impersonators

Yesterday morning had social media going into a tizzy as pictures of Rani Mukerji’s baby girl, Adira, were released. Soon, Yash Raj Films released an official statement saying that those pics were fake and were released by an impostor. This wasn’t the first time that a celebrity had to deal with fake accounts and its repercussions. Take a look:

Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut have been embroiled in a legal battle since March this year (Exes Hrithik-Kangana slap legal notices on each other, threats galore!,
Mar 14), with the actress reportedly claiming that she has been exchanging personal mails with the actor. However, Hrithik’s legal team has claimed that Kangana has been chatting with an impostor. The Bang Bang actor had allegedly filed a police complaint against the said impostor on December 12, 2014 and again requested the cyber crime cell to look into the matter in March this year when the controversy broke out.

Ayan Mukerji

The Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani director too landed in trouble this June, due to the cheap antics of an impostor. The impersonator had created a Facebook account and was asking girls to send their hot pictures to him, as a part of the casting process for his next film (Beware! Ayan Mukherji asking for hot, bold pictures, Jun 17). When SpotboyE.com contacted Ayan to shed light on the episode, he clarified that he didn’t have any Facebook account at all.

Kiran Rao

Aamir Khan’s wife filed a complaint with the Cyber Cell this June against an impostor who created a fake account on Facebook. The person had been regularly interacting with her friends and family members, posing as Kiran.

Vikram Bhatt

Around March this year, the Raaz 3 director registered a complaint at Versova Police Station about being the target of impersonation. The impostor had created a fake account on Twitter and was messaging influential people – one of them being Viren Shah (the owner of clothing store Roopam).

Mukesh Chabbra

When Nargis Fakhri got a call from ‘Mukesh Chhabra’ for the casting of a Hollywood film, she didn’t doubt the authenticity. However, when she bumped into the casting director a few weeks later, he told her plainly that he had never contacted her. A worried Nargis told him about the episode and Chhabra looked into the matter. He learnt that the impostor would call for pictures from innocent people, telling them that he is looking into the casting of major films, including that of Befikre. Chhabra instantly took to Twitter and alerted everyone on the situation.

In May 2014, Asin got the shock of her life when she found out that someone was impersonating her on Twitter. What’s more, the impostor was regularly interacting with her fellow co-stars Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh. Sensing that the situation was getting out of hand, the actress instantly clarified that she was not on any social media platforms.

Anurag Kashyap

When Anurag was showcasing his film That Girl In Yellow Boots across various film festivals in September 2010, the filmmaker learnt of 2 Twitter accounts where the account holders were posing as Kashyap and interacting with the audience. The Gangs Of Wasseypur director soon joined Twitter and cleared the air. He also lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell.

Kangana Ranaut

In 2010, news broke out that Priyanka Chopra had been interacting with her Fashion co-star on Facebook. Kangana was shocked to hear this since she didn’t have a Facebook account. The actress issued a public statement saying that she wasn’t on any social media platform.

Shilpa Shetty

When Shilpa Shetty was participating in Big Brother in 2007, UK-based Jasveer ‘Jazz’ Barton claimed to be Shilpa’s manager and took money from many unsuspecting people. When the actress got wind of this, she lodged a complaint of defamation against Barton.
