Aamir Khan’s Wife Kiran Rao Accepts “Nepotism Exists”
When Aamir Khan’s wife and filmmaker Kiran Rao, who has returned to direction, was asked about nepotism, she said that it prevails in every part of the society
Aamir Khan’s wife and filmmaker Kiran Rao, who has directed Dhobi Ghat and produced films like Dangal, Secret Superstar among others, has returned to director after 8 years with a few short films for social media. Kiran is not that active on social media, but she is known to raise her voice for cinema related issues, always. During her recent interview, when Kiran was asked if nepotism exits in industry she said it prevails in every part of the society.
Talking about the same, Kiran told Hindustan Times, “Speaking about nepotism, Kiran says that as long as we have children, we will all want our children to do well. “Nepotism exists in every part of the society. But we all believe that people also need to be good at their jobs, whether related to someone or not. Of course, we will always want to make our children achieve what they want to and if that is called nepotism, then it is. But everyone has to be aware that ultimately, only merit will speak.”

Rao also states that social media has been a sea change in the way audiences consume content. She said “Social media has seriously impacted the way we look at the visual media. The way we watch things has changed and the duration that we actually enjoy watching something has changed. It is not necessarily for the better or for worse, but the change in technology and the change in the world around us and the demand made by us as social animals, has resulted in this shift.”
Further, when she was asked if pre-censorship is affecting the storytelling process, she told HT, “As storytellers, we are always very aware of the environment in which we are telling stories. Whether we are conscious of it or not impacts the way we tell them. I think that’s the power for the board in today’s world, and in general across times and ways of storytelling. The social environment always dictates the kind of stories we tell and how we tell them.”
Kiran Rao has recently film short stories for social media. Talking about the same, she said, “I was excited about writing something for my second film and I had a lot of ideas, but was never happy with what I’d finally done with them. Now, I am past that zidd, and I’ll be working with writers and developing the ideas. Hopefully, we will have something quicker than when I was working on my own,” says Kiran, who began her career as an assistant director to filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker in Lagaan: Once upon a time in India (2001).”
