Aamir Khan Used To Come To My House’: Mamta Kulkarni Recalls Bonding With Actor During Baazi Shoot In The 1990s
Former actress Mamta Kulkarni recently took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, revisiting the warmth and camaraderie that defined Bollywood in the 1990s, particularly during the shoot of the film Baazi. Mamta reminisced about how Aamir Khan would often come straight to her house instead of using vanity vans, a common fixture on film sets today. During that era, vanity vans were not the norm, and actors frequently relied on each other’s homes for changing and resting between shoots.
Speaking to IANS, Mamta said that when they were filming Baazi, Aamir would come over to her place, sometimes changing outfits in her bedroom because there were no vanity vans back then. She explained that if he was shooting in Lokhandwala, he would simply head to her house to get ready. After long days on set, the pair would often return to her home, where Aamir would walk into her kitchen and make tea—a gesture she said reflected the closeness and trust that existed among artists at the time.
Reflecting on broader industry dynamics, Mamta responded to remarks by music composer A.R. Rahman about Bollywood being “communal”. She said she felt fortunate to have worked in an era where religion never influenced professional relationships. “Believe me, I never thought in those terms. I worked with Aamir Khan, I worked with Shah Rukh Khan… we never looked at each other’s religion,” she said, highlighting her belief that such considerations were absent in the 1990s.
Mamta also recalled world tours with Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan, where everyone would gather in each other’s homes, cook, make tea, and share moments off-screen—a stark contrast to today’s more compartmentalized industry.
Concluding on the evolution in music and film, she noted that tastes and careers change over time, remarking that what was once relevant may not be any longer.
