Mirabai Chanu’s Olympics earrings have found a new fan in Anushka Sharma. The actress took to her Instagram and gave a sweet shout-out to the Olympian.
Indian athlete Mirabai Chanu made every Indian proud by winning big at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday. The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg to emerge second in the 49 kg weightlifting category - behind China’s Hou Zhihui, who won the gold at 210 kg. Besides this, what drew the most attention was her pair of Olympic-ring-themed earrings. Not just netizens, even actress Anushka Sharma is in awe of Charu’s earrings, which have become an instant hit on the social media.
Taking to her Instagram stories, Anushka Sharma called the athlete a 'beauty' and even made a special mention of her earrings. She shared a news article of Mirabai Chanu with a special focus on her earrings and wrote, “This is….(purple heart emoticon).”
Mirabai's earrings are a gift from her mother who sold her own jewellery five years ago to buy them. The hope was that the earrings would bring her "good luck". It didn't happen in the Rio 2016 Games but Mirabai made the little sacrifice count in Tokyo with a silver medal.

Expressing her happiness over her daughter’s win, Chanu’s mother Leima told PTI, “I saw the earrings on TV; I gave them to her in 2016 before the (Rio) Olympics. I have made it for her from the gold pieces and savings I have so that it brings luck and success.”
“I was in tears seeing it and also during the moment she won the medal. Her father (Saikhom Kriti Meitei) was also in tears. Tears of joy. All her hard work has led to the success,” she added.
Scores of Bollywood celebrities, including Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan, Randeep Hooda, and Sonali Bendre among others also penned heartfelt congratulatory messages for Mirabai Chanu.
