Deepika Padukone made her debut in 2007 after being a popular model for many years. Popular opinion is that she was discovered by Farah Khan who cast her opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om. Not many know that it was Malaika Arora who had recommended Deepika's name to Farah.

According to a report in a popular glossy, Farah was looking out for a new face for an untitled film, which later became Om Shanti Om. Malaika, a close friend of Farah, was given the task of searching for a newbie worthy of the opportunity.
Malaika in her turn, asked popular fashion designer, Wendell Rodericks for recommendations. Wendell had the perfect girl for the film, and so asked Malaika to attend his upcoming fashion show, and there Malaika saw Deepika and the rest is history.

The popular glossy quoted Rodricks as saying, "I showed a collection called Isadora at Lakme Fashion Week. It was a game changer for Deepika. Director Farah Khan asked my friend Malaika to suggest a new model to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan for her new film. Om Shanti Om did not have a working title at the time. I suggested Deepika who was barely two years into modelling. I made her open the show and told Malaika that the first girl I was sending out was the one I recommend. Malaika liked her, conveyed the same to Farah and a screen test was done. The rest is history."
