The festival of Diwali is just around the corner, and this festival of lights is celebrated all over India. There are a lot of great things to look forward to, during this festive season. The most important ones being all the delicious food, but also, Bollywood releases! A few holidays such as Diwali, Eid, and Christmas, are considered important in the Bollywood movie calendar, and over the years, several blockbusters have released during this festive season of Diwali. With some very exciting movies like Made in China, Saand Ki Aankh and Housefull 4 releasing in Diwali this year, we bring to you films over the years, right from Ratan Dhan Payo To Om Shanti Om, that turned out to be blockbusters on this auspicious day.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)- This iconic movie that is still running at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir is one of the most successful Bollywood films. The romantic drama, which was Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut, stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead roles, The film’s budget was 4 crore and it had caused fireworks at the box-office earning Rs 53.31 crore back when it released. Now, the figure doesn’t seem like a lot as per today’s context, but we’re talking about 1995, when this figure was huge! Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)- This is yet another film that is remembered even today! This film was the directorial debut of Karan Johar and stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherji in lead roles. The film made Rs 46.86 crore at the box-office! The film has received numerous awards such as Filmfare Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Screen Awards, Bollywood Movie Awards and even the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.


Veer Zaara (2004)- This film, starring Preity Zinta and Shah Rukh Khan in lead roles, earned Rs. 41.86 crore. It won four awards at the Filmfare Awards, and 7 awards at IIFA, among others.


Don (2006)- Don, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal among others, was directed by Farhan Akhtar. While Don franchise originated with the 1978 thriller, Farhan Akhtar gave the 2006 film a contemporary style more suited to modern times. The film had earned Rs.  50.34 crore at the box office.


 Om Shanti Om (2007)- This Diwali release also marked Deepika Padukone’s Bollywood debut. Apart from her, the film also stars Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal among others. The film collected Rs. 78.16 crore and won the National Film Award for Best Production Design.


Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)- Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, this was Yash Chopra’s last directed film. This film which released during Diwali earned Rs. 101.59 crore at the box office.


Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)- This film starring Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor was directed by Sooraj Barjatya. This was the fourth collaboration of Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya after Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain. The film earned Rs. 194.3 crore at the box-office.


Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)- Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma starrer also had Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan in supporting roles. The film collected Rs 106.4 crore in India.


While these Diwali releases turned out to be blockbusters, we can’t wait to see how this year’s Diwali releases Housefull 4, Saand Ki Aankh and Made In China perform at the box-office!
