The maker of the video 'My Choice' speaks out...
The Happy New Year actress is the voice and face of a woman’s empowerment video titled My Choice. The video is directed by Homi Adajania and produced by Dinesh Vijan for a leading fashion glossys initiative for awareness towards womens issues. The said video features 98 faces other than Padukone from different walks of life. Some of the famous ones are actress Nimrat Kaur, film critic Anupama Chopra, director Zoya Akhtar, hair-styling guru Adhuna Akhtar and fashion designer Anaita Shroff Adajania.
The 2.35 minute video has gone viral and has received brickbats and bouquets in equal measures.
The time was right to speak to Adajania. And this is what he had to say...
How long did it take to put the video together?
Once our executive producer Poonam Shivdasani from Maddock Films came on board, she ensured that we managed the whole shoot in 9 hours flat. And then I added some more images taken by photographer Rohan Shrestha and Kaushal Parikh based on certain additional frames that I wanted to include in the edit.
How was the video conceptualised?
I was certain that I didn't want to do a fictional story piece. I also didn't want to portray the various aspects of oppression that women suffer, which is also an issue to be highlighted, but with this we wanted to show the world that we also have a strong, liberal-thinking Indian woman who exists in this world of gender inequality. I asked Kersi (Khambatta, co-writer
Being Cyrus and Finding Fanny) to write a powerful piece and decided to shoot these women as they processed and expressed themselves on hearing the lines for the first time.
Once I heard Kersis words I realised that the visual style would have to compliment and in no way detract from them. That's when I decided to keep a moving black and white portrait feel to the whole thing.
And now that its gone viral, what are your sentiments?
It's pretty obvious from the reactions that it is a feeling that has been suppressed for long enough.
And what about the people who are criticising it? There is a lot of flak on digital platforms...
They dont understand the context or they are Internet trolls hankering for attention, or maybe they have a different viewpoint...its a democracy and this is our view and they are entitled to theirs.
