Filmmaker Karan Johar turned emotional after veteran director David Dhawan hinted that his upcoming comedy entertainer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai might be the final film of his career. The revelation came during a celebration event linked to the film, leaving many from the industry nostalgic about the filmmaker’s contribution to Bollywood comedy cinema.
Taking to social media, Karan shared a heartfelt note expressing admiration for David Dhawan and the legacy he has built over decades. He revealed that when David informed him that the upcoming film would possibly be his last directorial venture, he experienced a “bittersweet reaction.” Karan praised the filmmaker for creating an entire genre of entertaining commercial cinema and said that a “David Dhawan film spells entertainment.” He further mentioned that David remains one of the most loved, respected, and celebrated filmmakers in the Hindi film industry.
Known for delivering several blockbuster comedies with stars like Govinda, Salman Khan, and later his son Varun Dhawan, David Dhawan has been a defining force in mainstream Bollywood entertainment for decades. His upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai stars Varun alongside Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde. The film is expected to release in theatres soon and is being viewed as a special milestone in David’s filmmaking journey.
Reacting to Karan’s emotional message, Varun Dhawan reshared the post and thanked the filmmaker for attending the celebration event and supporting his father. In his response, Varun wrote that it was now time to celebrate Karan as well, referring to the filmmaker’s birthday celebrations.
Earlier, David Dhawan had also opened up emotionally about stepping away from filmmaking. He reportedly admitted that health concerns and family members encouraging him to slow down played a major role in his decision. The veteran filmmaker said that after this film, he may simply choose to enjoy life as Varun Dhawan’s father rather than continue directing movies.
