Mary Kom starring Priyanka Chopra gained rave reviews from critics as well as movie buffs for showing the chronicles of an Indian boxer, Mary Kom. The film received several accolades including a National Award and Filmfare Award. However, Priyanka’s co-star Lin Laishram recently said that she had an issue with Priyanka being cast in the film. She said it was heartbreaking to see the actor essaying the titular role. According to Laishram, she feels someone from the North East could have done the role.
She told Bollywood Hungama, “As an actor, that self-centred egoistic actor tells me that I should have been... But it could have been anybody from the North East. We have many great actors. I want to be generous here, and say that there were many, many actors who could have done this. But the casting and the whole team decided on someone else. It's heartbreaking, but we are coming along, and I hope that this does not happen again.”
She thinks that any actor from North East would have been a great choice as the person is close to that land. She continued, “A lot of times, the casting is stereotyped, and we are stuck to a very small genre of our own. That's also a stereotype, and not in the best manner. So when a script like that comes up, from our place, it would be great to be given to somebody who is more eligible and who's close to that land, because it helps.”
Earlier, in another interview, Lin had praised the Bajirao Mastani actor for putting a lot of hard work into the character but had also expressed her disappointment with the casting of the film.
