Priyanka Chopra’s Designer Defends Actress’ Blouse-Less Act: “Not Using A Choli Makes It A Global Statement”

Priyanka Chopra created a lot of noise on social media when the sexy actress decided to ditch the blouse and drape her saree for InStyle’s July edition cover. The video, where PeeCee is seen flaunting her bare back, went viral in no time and she got slammed for disrespecting the Indian culture and disrupting the "graceful decorum" of saree.
While Priyanka has yet not reacted to the insane number of comments posted on the video’s timeline, her designer, Tarun Tahiliani has come out in actress’ defence. While talking to Mid-day, Tarun, who has crafted the saree in beautiful sequins, gota and Swarovski crystals, said there is nothing vulgar about what Priyanka did and that going blouse-less is a way of making a global statement.
"There's nothing vulgar about it. In fact, not using a choli makes it a global statement. The transition from alluring Indian beauty to this modern goddess for a mainstream fashion cover only speaks of her versatility. She is truly a modern Indian icon,” Tarun told the tabloid.
Meanwhile, Priyanka, in the interview to the magazine, expressed that saree is her favourite outfit, "My problem is when it comes to Indian fashion, there are always these shiny, sequinned, over-the-top Christmas-tree outfits. Those are not the sarees I wear. I grew up with my mother wearing sarees to the hospital, as a doctor. She'd wear these beautiful ones made of French chiffon, with a bindi over here. And the nape of her neck would smell like Dior's Poison. That, to me, was a modern woman. And that's what I want to show the world."
The tabloid further reports that Ami Patel, the actor's stylist for her India appearances, said PCJ and the saree share a special relationship. "Personally, I can't drape a saree, but she can nail it down with just three safety pins. She comes into her own in a saree; whether a jamdani with a three quarter blouse like she wore to the Padma Shri Awards in 2016, or this sexy one on the cover,” said Ami.
Well, we completely loved what Priyanka did with her cover shoot. It was sexy and classy! And as Tarun rightly points out, “there was nothing vulgar about it.” Have we forgotten that the “graceful decorum” of wearing a blouse and petticoat that the flag bearers of Indian culture are screaming out- are a product of British culture and not Indian?

Talking about going the Indian way for the cover shoot, InStyle's editor-in-chief Laura Brown said it was in fact, PCJ who suggested they embrace Indian fashion in the shoot, and called her "un-self-conscious and a rare bird".
