On April Fools day, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma made a tweet saying that he has contracted Coronavirus. Next day he cleared that he was fooling his fans, but he received backlash for the same.

Ram Gopal Varma surprised one and all when he tweeted that he has contracted Coronavirus. It was on April 1 that he made this tweet and it did not take very long for Twitterverse to figure out that he was playing an April Fools Day prank. However, some of netizens called him insensitive and stated that it is not right to make fun of something this serious. Ram Gopal Varma even posted an apology tweet later. Now, in an interview, he has opened up as to why he made that tweet.

Rangeela maker was quoted saying, "The only way to remain sane in such a [grim] situation is to joke about it, else we will get into depression. I knew I would get trolled for it. I believe a complaint has been filed against me for spreading false information. But it was meant as an April Fool joke, nothing else." He further added, "Did he not worry about hurting people's sentiments with his behaviour? "I [put out the tweet] because I was getting bored."

In his apology tweet, RGV had said, "Anyway I am just trying to make light of a grim situation but the joke is on me and if I dint offend anyone I sincerely apologise to them."


Ram Gopal Varma is currently observing self-isolation in his Hyderabad office. Due to lockdown, he can't travel back to Mumbai. Meanwhile, to raise awareness about the novel virus, he released a song that is penned by him.
