In 2005, Shefali Shah worked with her husband, Vipul Amrutlal Shah, for the first time in his own production and directorial, Waqt: The Race Against Time, that also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the lead. After that, the couple collaborated on a couple more projects—the 2011 release Kucch Luv Jaisaa and Commando 2 in 2017. The duo is now working together again on the upcoming medical thriller Human.
Ask Shefali how her experience of working with her husband has changed since Waqt, and she responds, “I think my husband would be more suited to answer this question.” She goes on to add that she was very young when she did Waqt so her approach towards her work was different in itself. “I didn’t have the learning and maturity that I have gotten over the years. With Delhi Crime, my work process changed and the kind of work I do on a script right now isn’t the same as I did then. It used to be impulsive and instinctive, and even today in front of the camera I am the same as I don’t know what I will do once the camera rolls, but before that, I really work on the script and my character. So, Waqt must have been easier for him to work with me,” she quips.
Talking about her Human experience, Shefali is quite sure that her questions and suggestions might have annoyed her husband and director Mozez Singh a bit. “During Human, every time I asked for a meeting with the director, I would take notes double the size of the script that I was given, and every time they would look at that pile, they’d feel exasperated and cancel their further meetings of the day as they were sure I would take all of their time,” she laughs.
Human is a medical thriller that tells the story of human trials and will also feature Kirti Kulhari in the lead as a doctor. The series will stream on Disney+ Hotstar and is produced by Vipul.
