Suchitra Krishnamoorthi Reveals Ex-Husband Shekhar Kapur Cheated On Her; Says, ‘My Marriage Was Karma, When I Met Him I Got Obsessed’
Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has opened up about her relationship with ex-husband, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur
Singer and actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi became a household name when starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994). While she went on to tie the knot with filmmaker Shekhar Kapur in 1999, the couple filed for divorce in 2007. Now after more than a decade and a half of their separation, the actress has opened up about her tumultuous relationship with the Mr. India director. In a recent interview, she revealed that she had met him when she was 19 and got married when she was 22.
During her interaction with RJ Siddharth Kannan, Suchitra shared that the filmmaker didn’t want her to act, however, as she was from a non-filmy background it wasn’t that big of a deal. She went on to explain that she used to get offers when she was in school and college. She did a Malayalam movie as well as Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa while she was in college. She added how her parents didn’t want her to act, so she would lie to them and went to Kochi for the shoot. She went on to star in many movies which became superhit. So when Shekhar told her not to act, she failed to understand his thinking and realized this quite late.
Calling her marriage to the filmmaker karma, the 47-year-old shared, “I feel that my marriage to Shekhar Kapur was karma that I had to fulfil. Because when I met him I got obsessed. When I was a 10-12-year-old kid, I used to think that I will either marry Imran Khan (former cricketer and former PM of Pakistan) or Shekhar Kapur. I went to meet him when he was casting for a film called, Champion. However, the film didn’t see the light of day. Then I kept meeting him and one thing led to another.”
The actress revealed that while she was smitten with him, he had made it clear that he wasn’t serious about her. Being of a conservative mindset, she threatened him to marry her or else they wouldn’t meet. In the interview, she also spoke about how her parents were against the marriage as Shekhar was not only a divorcee, from the entertainment industry but also the same age as his mother. They encouraged her to have an affair with him and get it out of her head, but she was adamant on marrying him.
Suchitra went on to talk about how the cracks in the marriage had developed in the first year itself, which had led to her contemplating divorce, however, she decided to stay after discovering that she was pregnant with their daughter, Kaveri Kapur. Addressing the topic of facing infidelity throughout her marriage, she admitted how Shekhar had cheated on her. She went on to add, “I don’t think marriages break because of infidelity, they break up because of disrespect.”
On the work front, she made her much-awaited comeback with the movie Odd Couple, co-starring Vijay Raaz.
