Papa David was supposed to direct this film 10 years ago
Its funny how life comes full circle. In 2006, David Dhawan was asked to wield the megaphone for a remake of the Dev Anand 1970 superhit Johny Mera Naam. The film was supposed to be produced by Suniel Shetty and Shabbir Boxwallas Popcorn Entertainment. Abhishek Bachchan was being said to play Devs role.
For those whove not caught the amazing movie, Johny Mera Naam is about two brothers who are great boxers. However, fate throws them a curve-ball when their father is killed. One of the brothers kills his fathers murderer and then goes missing. The brothers ,played by Dev Anand and Plan grow up on either side of the law, and the rest is legendary (If you havent seen the film, catch up on it ASAP).
However, plans of the remake fell through and thats where the story ended. Or so we thought. In classic Bollywood style, theres a kahani mein twist.
Now, Gulshan Rais son Rajiv Rai has decided to remake the film with Shabbir. The film will mark the return of Rajiv to direction.
Rajiv has directed hits like Tridev, Vishwatma, Mohra and Gupt. After an attempt on his life by gangsters, he had left the country with his wife actress Sonam and child. He then made Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat and Asambhav - but neither clicked.
Now, Rajiv is back in Mumbai.
And the most exciting part is that Shabbir and he have decided to approach Varun Dhawan for the undercover CID officer who goes by the name Johny.
Dhawan Jr has charisma and an insane female fan following. But it remains to be seen if he accepts the offer and does justice to it.
Looks like the project was always destined to have a Dhawan. You see, life does come full circle.
