Sushant Singh Rajput took his life on June 14, 2020. His death led to an uproar in the entertainment industry and the lives of his fans came to a standstill. His then girlfriend and actress Rhea Chakraborty came under the spotlight for providing him drugs, which led her to getting arrested.
Recalling the incident and Rhea’s behaviour in jail, human rights lawyer, activist and trade unionist Sudha Bharadwaj, who was arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in the Bhima Koregaon case, shared that she and other inmates thought that Rhea was being made a scapegoat in the entire ordeal.

She was glad that Rhea was kept in a special cell with no TV, as she didn’t want to watch the media making news on her. Bharadwaj shared, “At that time, we used to say that Rhea is being made a scapegoat. We were very unhappy with it. So, I was very glad that she was not brought into the main barrack; she was kept in the special cell. I think she was kept there so that she did not see the TV because people would keep that TV on. All the time hearing about your case would have been too upsetting for her.”
They were kept in Mumbai’s Byculla jail.

Praising Rhea for taking the entire situation sportingly, Bharadwaj shared that the actress was very friendly to everyone, even the children. She said, “She was so friendly with people. She was so friendly with the children. The first day, everybody was going ‘Rhea kahan hai (Where is Rhea)?’ But she would never make a thing of it. And when she left, she had some money remaining in her account, so for all the barracks she asked for sweets to be given, and everybody came down to wish her goodbye. Then, everybody said, ‘Rhea, one dance, one dance’. And she actually obliged and danced with them.”
