Bhumika Chawla exploded in Bollywood with the film Tere Naam in 2003 opposite Salman Khan. The film’s massive success made us believe that the actress is here to stay, but unfortunately, after a few not so successful films, she disappeared from the Bollywood scene and lent her focus down South.
Now, Bhumika has a new South film called Ruler that’s releasing tomorrow (Dec 20). Ahead of its big screen release, the actress talks about the two big film industries in India, the differences and her upcoming projects.
We begin the conversation by asking Bhumika as to why has she disappeared and the actress states that she has been working non-stop since the past 3 years.
“In 2017, I did a film called MCA (Middle Class Abbayi). I got the Best Supporting Actress Filmfare nomination for the film and the SIIMA Award for Best Supporting Actress and Zee Apsara Award too,” says Bhumika.
Then, she talks about her last year releases, “I did Savyasachi in Telugu, U Turn which was made in Telugu and Tamil simultaneously and it’s now being made in Hindi again by Balaji.”
Finally, she gets down to talking about her upcoming release, called Ruler with Balakrishna that’s releasing tomorrow. Then, the topic veers towards web shows and the actress reveals that she did one named Bhram earlier this year with Kalki Koechlin and Sanjay Suri.
This brings us to our next question that with the content on web shows becoming bolder, is she open to steamy scenes on-screen? Bhumika replies with a disclaimer, “If the story really demands it, then maybe I’ll do bold scenes, but I’m not sure of it.”
Well, Bhumika has been MIA from Bollywood since a long time now, so naturally, we ask the actress to tell us the reason. We also go about citing examples of how some artistes call up directors/producers asking for work to which Bhumika says, “Unfortunately, I’m not like that. Maybe I should have done it, but I didn’t. I have not been a social person.” Is she on social media, we ask. “Yes, I am,” comes the answer.
Considering the fact that she has been away from the Hindi film industry, we quiz her if she misses it badly and Bhumika says that she loves working in the South because “I started my career there and I have a certain comfort level. But at the same time, I do miss working in Bollywood because the kind of films or web series that are being made these days are really good. Bollywood is more experimental than the South film industry.”
Finally, the conversation moves to her personal life and we point out the rumours of a fallout between the actress and her husband Bharat Thakur that surfaced in 2011. Defying them, Bhumika stated that they are very much together. “These news don’t make a difference to me. Everyone writes these reports about the biggest of stars, so it doesn’t really matter,” are her parting words.
