Karan Johar Pays Tribute To Raja Ravi Varma At Met Gala 2026 Debut With 6-Foot Painted Coat
Filmmaker Karan Johar made a striking debut at the Met Gala 2026, turning heads with a dramatic ensemble inspired by legendary Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma. Designed by ace couturier Manish Malhotra, the outfit was a tribute to Indian art and craftsmanship, perfectly aligning with the event’s theme, “Costume Art.”

Titled “Framed in Eternity,” the bespoke creation featured Johar in a structured, power-shouldered vintage jacket paired with a dramatic hand-painted cape that stretched nearly six feet in length. The cape showcased intricate artwork inspired by Raja Ravi Varma’s iconic paintings, transforming the filmmaker into what many described as a “moving canvas.”

The ensemble was not just visually striking but also a rsult of detailed craftsmanship. Over 80 artisans worked for approximately 85 days to bring the vision to life, carefully hand-painting and constructing every element of the outfit. The look also incorporated layered textures and heritage detailing, reflecting a deep connection to Indian artistic traditions.

Johar completed his appearance with statement jewellery from his label Tyaani, including a multi-gemstone necklace and rings that complemented the grandeur of the attire without overshadowing its artistic essence.

Speaking about his inspiration, Johar shared that his choice was deeply personal. He expressed his admiration for Raja Ravi Varma’s work, noting how the artist’s paintings capture emotions—something he has always aimed to achieve through cinema. He added that rather than trying to “explain India,” he wanted to present something authentic to himself, which naturally reflected his roots and storytelling sensibilities.

With this appearance, Karan Johar not only marked his Met Gala debut in style but also showcased Indian art and culture on a global stage, blending tradition with high fashion in a powerful and memorable way.
